Most of the chocolate snacks we find in the supermarket all have one thing in common: their percentage of cocoa is very low and the amount of sugar or sweeteners is very high. That is why we have decided to continue advancing in the change and today we present you the Cacao & Nuts, a 100% healthy snack, without sugars or sweeteners.
We are committed to the fight against unnecessary sugar that is found in many products. Chocolate is our main focus because it is one of the foods most manipulated by the food industry, which fills it with sugars, sweeteners, additives, butter, and palm oil.
For example, the popular chocolate coated peanut. When we read the label we realize the disproportionate intake of added sugar that this snack supposes. For every 100 grams of product, 44% sugar is added.
We have shown in many of our products that it doesn’t have to be this. Sugar is not needed for tastiness. This is why we wanted to reinvent the chocolate covered peanut by launching our healthier version. For every 100 grams of Cacao & Nuts they only contain 4.1 naturally present sugar.
Risks of excess sugar
The WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations indicate that sugar should not account for more than 10% of the total daily calories consumed by an adult. And if it is 5%, even better. This equates to about six dessert spoons. It seems like a lot and you might think that you never reach that amount in a day, right? Well, that amount is usually exceeded daily if we take into account the large amount of sugar that is hidden in products such as these chocolate peanuts or in juices, yogurts, sliced bread, sauces or pre-cooked dishes.
Sometimes the name sugar appears but other times we can find this substance with others names like glucose syrup, sucrose, fructose … The truth is that in Spain we usually exceed that 10% by a lot (the latest study warns that we tripled that figure) and the The consequences of this excessive consumption are fatal:
- Increased risk of diabetes
- Arterial hypertension
- Premature aging
And what about sweeteners?
As more and more people became aware of the harms of sugar, sweeteners became popular and used more by the food industry. The idea was to provide the sweet taste with, apparently, less damage to our body. And, what finally placed them as the perfect substitutes for sugar was the fact that they were considered allies in weight loss.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. Sweeteners (especially artificial ones) are just as harmful to our body as sugar. The mechanism of how they act in our body is simple. They “trick” the brain into thinking that it detects a sweet taste, it activates the reward system; which can accelerate excess insulin secretion and eventually the development of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease. In addition, its consumption in excess can alter the microbiota and cause digestive problems and even rebound weight gain.
The infamous sweeteners have been found on shelves for yeats as an ingredient in many products that claim 0% sugar. But, if we look closely, we will find that they carry a very high amount of artificial sweeteners, not natural. This worried us, so we set out to change it.
Chicory fiber, our solution
Our products are sweetened with chicory fiber, a natural sweetener that not only provides a delicious sweet taste but is also super healthy for the functioning of the body.
Fundamentally, chicory fiber rejuvenates the gut microbiota, lowers blood sugar levels, is low in calories, and is satiating. In addition, it prevents constipation, strengthens the immune system, improves digestion, helps to drain, fights fluid retention, detoxifies the body …
For all these reasons and for the incredible results we’ve had in using it in our Chocolicius chocolate bars and in our Cocoa and Hazelnut Cream, we have used it to sweeten our Cacao & Nuts and thus make a 100% healthy snack.
A 100% healthy and 100% natural snack
Cacao & Nuts is a natural product, composed of a high percentage of natural peanuts (50%), in comparison to the traditional ones (38%).
In addition, we only use natural cocoa, without sugars, without sweeteners, without processing, without colorants, without starches … This is something that is not very common. If you don’t believe it, take a look at the labels. Specifically, the traditional chocolate peanuts that we all know include coating agents (E-414, starch, E-904), coloring (E-171), substances all of which are harmful and harmful to health.
